Studio holiday portraits are always great if the family wants to dress up. It’s never weather permitting and the temperature is always just right. Most people don’t want to sit on the grass or cold ground when wearing nicer clothes either! Dressier outfits always look great with dramatic lighting as well, which is always an option at the studio.
In this collection, everyone is dressed up. Keep in mind that when dressing up, everyone needs to be dressed up to the same level. Otherwise, it won’t look right. All the women are in short cocktail dresses. If going for a more formal approach, it’s usually best to avoid patterns. Patterns often look casual. Plus, not many semi-formal clothes have patterns. Instead, there’s lots of texture within the flowy dresses. The intricate lace detail of the cream dress also adds an interesting element.
There’s a bit of layering with the accessories and the father’s blazer, but for the most part this was kept very simple. There’s are several different blocks of color, but since they’re all the same hue it works well.
Dressing up may not be the most comfortable for your family, but it’s much more relaxing in the studio verse a location session. It can also make it a little more special for the holidays!
